Natural Ingredients used in Magical Potions

Jojoba Oil

Did you know Jojoba Oil is a liquid wax rather than an oil? It closely mimics the sebum of the skin, making it a fantastic carrier oil for use both on its own and for diluting essential oils. Jojoba Oil is derived from a small shrub or tree that produces dark brown hard oval nuts. These nuts are then cold pressed to make the Jojoba Oil. It is clear in colour and has a slightly nutty aroma, and because it is a wax, Jojoba Oil has a medium viscosity. Jojoba Oil For Face Benefits: The chemical profile of Jojoba Oil includes vitamins E and B, essential fatty acids, stearic acid, palmitic and palmitoleic acid, behenic acid and oleic acid. As a result, Jojoba Oil possesses many anti-inflammatory, emollient, antibacterial, healing and balancing properties. Jojoba Oil is also non-comedogenic, hypoallergenic and possesses a rich source of antioxidants that have been seen to help promote healthy, glowing skin. It is for these reasons that Jojoba Oil is so highly valued in the cosmetic industry. Jojoba Oil is one of the most nourishing carrier oils for the skin due to its rich fatty acid content. Some of the most common uses of Jojoba Oil to treat skin concerns on the face include: Jojoba Oil For Dry Face: Jojoba Oil is a humectant (moisturising) ingredient. This has been shown to attract water to the top layer of the skin, helping keep the face hydrated and moisturised. Jojoba Oil For Dry, Flaking Skin On Face: Jojoba Oil possesses anti-inflammatory and healing properties that are believed to help relieve dryness, itching and flaking skin. Jojoba Oil For Oily Skin: The cleansing and balancing properties of Jojoba Oil have been seen to help regulate the skin’s oil production, making it a great choice for those with oily skin. Jojoba Oil For Face Wrinkles: As it is such an effective moisturiser, Jojoba Oil is believed to be great for combating signs of ageing such as the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Jojoba Oil For Face Acne Jojoba Oil’s vitamin E, behenic and stearic acid content is believed to help cleanse the pores, regulate the skin's oils and remove excess dirt. It also closely resembles human sebum, meaning it may help reduce acne breakouts by removing excess oils from the face. Is Jojoba Oil Safe To Use? Jojoba Oil’s hypoallergenic nature means it is generally safe for topical use on most skin types. However, there are some rare cases where Jojoba Oil may cause allergies, so it is always recommended to do a skin patch test before use.

Coconut Oil

Benefits of Coconut Oil on Skin It hydrates. Coconut oil is made up of medium chain fatty acids that help to reduce dryness and allow your skin to retain moisture. It helps to protect skin. Coconut oil provides a protective barrier, shielding skin from environmental toxins, dirt, and other environmental pollutants we're faced with every day. It smooths skin. Applying coconut oil to your skin has a smoothing, softening effect; and over time, it can help to improve your skin’s texture. It minimises the look of fine lines and wrinkles. Coconut oil can help to diminish the signs of aging when used regularly. By hydrating and softening the skin, it works to make those little lines and wrinkles appear far less obvious. It calms temporary redness. This nutty oil has a soothing, calming effect and can help reduce temporary redness when applied to the skin. It provides antioxidants. With antioxidant and phytonutrient (plant compounds) components, coconut oil for face can help boost your nutrient factor and fight against environmental stressors that accelerate signs of aging. It soothes irritated skin. If you’re prone to irritations or sensitivity, coconut oil can help to alleviate discomfort and provide soothing relief. Cautions for using Coconut Oil on face: Coconut oil is high on the comedogenic scale, which means have a higher likelihood of clogging up follicular openings (aka pores) Coconut oil is very thick, which makes it harder to absorb into the skin. This can cause the oil to sit on top of the skin (instead of sinking in) and essentially traps dead skin cells, sebum, and bacteria on the surface of your skin. This can lead to trapped substances clogging up your pores. This can be especially risky for those with oily skin as using coconut oil could trap the excess sebum. For the above reason, Magical Potions do not use Coconut Oil in any Face Potions and instead chose to use fast absorbing and low comedogenic rated oils such as Olive Squalane (not technically an oil but an extract), Jojoba, Hemp Seed, Grapeseed & Apricot Kernel. Coconut is however beneficial for the skin as outlined above and is used within our balms and crystal roller bottles.

Hemp Seed Oil

Regenerates Your Skin’s Protective Layer. Your skin is coated with a combination of oil and water known as the hydrolipidic layer. This barrier serves two important functions: •It keeps moisture from evaporating off the surface of your skin. •It protects your skin from dirt, dust, allergens, sunlight, and other external irritants. Sometimes, though, the protective layer can break down and develop thin spots. These “holes” allow moisture out and irritants in. Over time, that can cause your skin to become dehydrated and sore. The fatty acids in hemp seed oil function as a natural emollient to seal up the thin spots in your hydrolipidic layer. Those same fatty acids also promote the healthy growth of the oil-and-water barrier so you don’t develop problems in the future. Healing and prevention all in one. It doesn’t get much better than that. Prevents Psoriasis. Psoriasis is a condition that causes your skin cells to multiply up to 10 times faster than normal. As these cells pile up on your skin’s surface, they can cause raised red and white scales. The fatty acids in hemp seed oil can improve oxygenation, hydration, and exfoliation, and help prevent psoriasis. Hydrates Dry Skin. When you apply hemp seed oil to your skin, its unique chemical makeup functions as both a moisturiser and a hydrator. Wait, don’t those two words mean the same thing? Nope, they’re very different. A moisturiser forms a layer on the surface of your skin to keep moisture from evaporating. A hydrator, on the other hand, actually puts moisture into your skin. Hemp seed oil is one of those rare plant-based products that acts as a natural hydrator to keep your skin soft, smooth, and healthy. Locks Moisture Against Your Skin. But the benefits of hemp oil don’t end with putting moisture into your skin. Hemp seed oil also acts as a moisturiser to lock water molecules against your skin where they can do the most good. In the world of lotions and creams, you would need two separate products applied in a specific order to get the best results: first, a hydrator to put water molecules into your skin, followed by a moisturiser to keep the water molecules from evaporating. But with hemp seed oil, you only need one application to get the same results. What a time-saver! Won’t Clog Pores. Some oils combine with dead skin cells, waxes, and dirt to clog your pores. Hemp seed oil doesn’t. That means you can moisturise and hydrate to your heart’s content without worrying about the problems associated with clogged pores. Reduces Fine Lines & Wrinkles. Because of the moisturizing and hydrating properties mentioned above, hemp seed oil is also effective at reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Here’s how it works: 1.Hemp seed oil fills your skin with extra moisture, which makes your skin plumper. 2.Hemp seed oil stimulates the natural production of collagen. The collagen provides support for the layers of skin above it. 3.The antioxidants in hemp seed oil fight free radicals that can damage your skin cells. Hemp seed oil also provides a small amount of protection against wrinkle-causing sun damage. Keep in mind that hemp seed oil is in no way a substitute for an SPF 30 or 45 sunscreen. Even if you use hemp seed oil on your skin, you should always apply a sunscreen before going outside. Soothes Irritated Skin. If your skin feels swollen, tired, and irritated, hemp seed oil can help. Hemp oil is naturally soothing and can calm the tightness that’s making you uncomfortable. Treats Skin Rashes & Acne. Hemp seed oil is an excellent treatment for skin rashes and acne because of its hydrating and moisturising properties. Couple that with the fact that hemp seed oil won’t clog your pores and you’ve got an effective treatment for unsightly acne and annoying rashes. Prevents Varicose Veins. The omega-3 fatty acids in hemp seed oil thin your blood and can help reduce and prevent the appearance of varicose veins. It’s important to remember that any omega-3 product applied directly to your skin should not be the only treatment you take for varicose veins. Even though you can see your veins through your skin, they’re actually very deep inside your body. Your veins may get a small amount of omega-3 if you apply hemp oil to your skin. Prevents Cell Damage. Your cells are surrounded by a protective layer called the myelin sheath. Without the proper vitamins and minerals, that sheath can begin to break down (a process known as demyelination). The essential fatty acids in hemp seed oil (omega-3 and omega-6) help strengthen and maintain the myelin sheath so your skin cells stay healthy.

Using sweet almond oil on your nails may also reduce irritation that can occur from biting nails or cuticles. Smoothing Rough, Dry Skin Patches. As mentioned, sweet almond oil is an excellent moisturiser. So much so that using sweet almond oil for your skin can help with dry skin patches or rough areas. This oil is loaded with vitamin E which moisturizes effectively while it also contains zinc which can assist in soothing those areas.

Chamomile Extract

Chamomile Extract is used as an anti-inflammatory and as a mild sedative which is why it is a perfect addition to Magical Potions Night Cream. Chamomile has long been a key ingredient in soothing skin care regimens. The ancient Greeks and Egyptians applied crushed chamomile flowers to their skin to treat weather-related redness and dryness. Hundreds of years later, scientific research has found that the compounds in chamomile likely do make it a powerful skin multitasker. Chamomile contains powerful antioxidants including polyphenols and phytochemicals. When applied to the skin, it may help reduce signs of aging by protecting the skin from free radical damage. It accelerates cell and tissue renewal, reducing the appearance of fine lines and giving skin a youthful glow.

Olive Squalene

Squalane is probably one of the best ingredients you could include into your facial serums and facial oils for oh-so-many reasons: •It’s completely natural •Suitable for all skin types •Protects against the loss of moisture •Improves elasticity •Very light •Easily absorbed •It feels luxurious What is Squalane? Squalene is a natural organic compound which is part of our tissues. It is a polyunsaturated hydrocarbon, its molecular structure resembling that of vitamin E. Squalene, however, contains four additional groups of isoprenoids, which are very potent natural antioxidants. At first, the main source of squalane production was from shark liver oil, but nowadays it is also obtained from plant organisms such as wheatgerm, rice bran and olives (Magical Potions sources plant derived olive squalane). It is important to note that all complex organisms produce squalane. For example, in newborns is where the most amount of squalane is found, and from the age of 25 we start to lose it. Olive Squalane Benefits for Skin: Olive squalane oil is technically inaccurate. It is actually an extract (a component). •Its beneficial action on our cells makes it a powerful antioxidant protecting cells from free radicals •An exceptional hydrator similar to our skin’s sebum •Helps against the effects of age acting as a lubricant and restorative of adipose tissue •Adds protection against loss of moisture •Non-comedogenic (wonderful!, won’t clog pores) •Enhances elasticity •A fantastic emollient, softens the skin and adds a silky feel to it.

Apricot Kernel Oil

Deeply nourishing. Rich with vitamins and minerals, apricot kernel oil is a plant-based ingredient that deeply nourishes the skin. As the skin is porous, and the texture of apricot oil ensures it penetrates through the protective surface layers providing a lasting effect. Essential fatty acids. The fatty acid profile of the oil is what makes it so useful. Omega oils have been tried and tested at benefiting the skin’s natural protective barrier for centuries. Linoleic acid (omega 6) and oleic acid (omega 9) contents help keep the skin nourished and protected from harmful forces. Rich in vitamin A and anti-ageing Rich in vitamin A, this is beneficial to the production of cell turnover on our face. The oil is rich in compounds that speed up cell turnover. This promotes a more youthful-looking glow as the youngest cells are pushed to the surface. Vitamin A provides essential support for the skin cells to plump the skin. This promotes the visible reduction of fine lines and wrinkles. A dewy glow. Along with the previously mentioned vitamin A, the kernel oil is naturally high in vitamin E and C. The three work in conjunction to clarify the skin’s tone and complexion, promoting a natural glow. Gives skin a satin-like, softer texture. When our skin gets the food it needs, then its texture naturally improves. The presence of vitamin A encourages the overall suppleness of the skin. As vitamin A acts as a natural exfoliant, softer and smoother skin is encouraged over time. Long-lasting hydration. As a strong emollient, apricot kernel oil lubricates the skin by drawing moisture to the surface. It encourages the moisture from the elements and from the other steps in your skincare routine. Contains essential vitamin B17. Laetrile, or amygdalin (B17), is a naturally occurring chemical compound often found in the pips of many fruits such as apricots, apples, peaches, plums, or red cherries. The body can’t naturally produce B17 but needs it for the functioning of the immune system and as a beneficial anti-inflammatory. The presence of this vitamin in apricot kernel oil makes the oil a competitive choice for your skin’s overall health. Promotes skin’s strength and elasticity. Our skin undergoes an array of daily stressors, from harsh weather conditions, makeup use, or polluting air environments. Not to mention the effect our internal health has on the overall condition and appearance of our skin. As we age, the effects of these elements play a role in the reduction of elasticity and cell damage to our skin. Vitamin A helps to encourage the strength of nutrients present in the skin. Provides a protective barrier. As previously mentioned, the quicker turnover of cells ensures the skin is forming a strong barrier against oxidative damage. When used daily, apricot oil will nourish the skin and allow it to function properly, no matter your skin’s age. By using B17 rich skincare products, the skin is protected against free radicals that increase the signs of ageing. Anti-inflammatory. As apricot oil is incredibly nourishing, it can help to soothe painful skin conditions such as psoriasis, acne and rosacea. Whenever you have a flare-up, products containing apricot oil will encourage healthier skin and help to destress. Fights acne-causing bacteria. Acne-prone skin would benefit from vitamin A in apricot oil. Vit A helps clogged pores rejuvenate, which may result in clearer skin in the long run. As it’s a light carrier oil, you don’t have to worry about giving your pores too much to handle. Its deep moisturising properties means that the pores don’t overwork themselves to provide vital surface hydration. The overproduction of sebum is often caused by an underlying dehydrated skin texture. Evidently, the skin is attempting to nourish itself. This build-up of sebum creates an unwanted clogging of pores and, finally, acne. Incorporating apricot kernel oil into your routine will help correct the skin.

Candelilla Wax

Learn why this wax is vegan-friendly and an indispensable component in clean beauty products. What is Candelilla Wax? It's high in vitamins E, B, and A, as well as certain essential fats and minerals that make it perfect for topical application. There are a number of benefits of wheat protein for skin, including promoting younger skin and offering deep hydration. It Improves Elasticity. The protein delivered by wheat is utilised by cells to regenerate the skin. In other words, as new layers of skin surface, the appearance of the tone and texture of the skin is significantly improved. Thanks to wheat’s content of vitamins E and A, it is an excellent source of potent natural antioxidants which help to fight free radicals. Free radicals, in case you weren’t aware, are the result of excessive sun exposure — a leading cause of premature aging. Because antioxidants promote healthy skin, wheat protein promotes younger-looking, healthier skin. Wheat protein also contains ceramides, a special kind of lipid that retains moisture once it is applied to the skin. Ceramides prevent the skin from becoming both too dry or too oily. It also helps to plump cheeks, and prevents signs of aging, like drooping jowls, hollowness, and sagging cheeks. Applied topically, these lipids fill out the appearance of drooping areas, while at the same time providing the skin with long-term moisture. It Deeply Hydrates. Moisturising is an essential part of skincare. Dehydrated skin can lead to fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging. Wheat protein is a highly moisturising product that can ease dry skin in users. And, as we all know, Cautions before use: The main drawback of wheat protein for the skin is that people who are allergic to wheat may suffer adverse affects following application. If you are allergic to wheat, ask your dermatologist and allergist prior to applying to your skin. It’s definitely worth finding out whether you can use wheat in your skincare routine, as it is a spectacular ingredient known for promoting younger and healthier skin. Still, you should be aware that wheat protein is still derived from wheat, so if you know you have an intolerance, consult with your dermatologist first and if you do experience any unpleasant side effects, stop using immediately.

The shimmer and bling are naturally occurring when the rock is broken down into tiny dust-like particles. The colour, however, is usually not. The colour that is added to mica in 95% of cases is synthetically produced and adhered to the rock to create the gorgeous colour range we have come to associate with the name "mica". Shellac is often also added for extra shimmer. (Shellac is a resin that is secreted by an insect onto tree trunks.) Magical Potions choses to source their Mica from a local supplier who offers the following: Ethically sourced – we do not buy from mines who exploit children as workers 100% pure colour made from muscovite flakes coated with ultramarines, iron oxides and natural dyes (no Shellac) Vegan friendly – Cosmetic grade – Cruelty free

(Glycation is a chemical reaction mainly caused by the excess sugar we ingest and oxidative stress, pollution and UV radiation - sugar molecules attach themselves to other molecules such as Collagen and Elastin, causing loss of elasticity, uneven skin tone and ageing). Recent studies have confirmed that lactic acid fermented Butterfly pea flower has a particularly strong free-radical scavenging and anti-inflammatory ability. It inhibits redness, itching, allergies, and irritation to the skin. Organic Rose Petals: Antioxidant Powerhouse. Naturally Derived Ingredients used in Magical Potions

D-Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5)

What is D-Panthenol? Known in the beauty industry as provitamin B5, it is a more stable alcohol derivative of pantothenic acid or vitamin B5. Found in all living cells, both plant and animal, panthenol is a normal component of skin and hair and is essential for normal metabolism and hormone production. It is readily absorbed by the skin, where it turns into pantothenic acid, encouraging cellular growth. It is great for all skin types, particularly those with dry, flaky, sensitive skin and functions primarily as a lubricant, emollient and moisturiser. A deficiency in vitamin B5 in the skin can result in serious dermatological disorders, which shows the importance of this ingredient in maintaining healthy skin. Penetrative: When panthenol is applied to your skin, it results in a conversion to pantothenic acid – from here it is readily absorbed, penetrating deep into the lower layers. Hydrating: Panthenol has a distinct humectant character, its hygroscopic properties mean, not only does it bring water to the surface of your skin, but it also penetrates deep into the epidermis infusing water in the cells, retaining moisture deep within your tissues. Moisturising: It is considered a mega moisturiser because of its emollient properties, it helps to lighten scars and stretch marks and has wound-healing properties – leaving the skin soft, smooth, and supple. Anti-inflammatory: Panthenol is extremely moisturising when regularly used over a period of four weeks or more, it takes on an anti-inflammatory role; relieving systemic itching, whilst also helping to soothe dry skin. Barrier repairing: Panthenol-based formulations significantly can increase the moisture of your skin, which means it has important beneficial effects on your skins barrier function, by decreasing transepidermal water loss (TEWL). A study carried out on the topical effects of panthenol, found that concentrations of pro-vitamin also influenced the barrier function’s improvement. Just one per cent panthenol added to a formulation showed that panthenol’s moisturising effects could be attributed mainly to the skin barrier’s protective properties. The study also found that a deficiency in panthenol can result in dermatological disorders, explaining its anti-inflammatory properties. Wound healing: When panthenol is applied topically, it stimulates skin cells’ epithelization as shown by Weiser and Erlemann. In this research, superficial wounds treated with creams containing around 5% panthenol, increased skin healing by about 30% compared with the placebo. Favourable results were also reported in several inflammatory skin disorders, including burns, eczema, nipple fissures, etc. What we can draw from this, is that panthenol may be useful in the application of derma products and wound healing, especially when incorporated in topical concentrations of around 5%, it may also be an important ingredient in maintaining physiological skin conditions, soothing inflammatory disorders and preventing dry skin conditions. Panthenol for your hair: You don’t get very far in the beauty industry, without hearing about the wonderful affinity panthenol has on the hair. This is because it is actually a major constituent of our hair. The use of panthenol in haircare products goes back to the early 1960s when inflammatory reactions on the scalp were treated with panthenol-containing creams. Panthenol not only showed a soothing effect but also had beneficial effects on the hair. Penetrative: It has a unique way of penetrating deep into the hair’s core; when it is left on for five minutes or more, it swells the hair shaft – giving your hair more body. Protective: It naturally creates a film of moisture on the hair shaft, giving your hair added protection. Moisturising: Panthenol’s ability to regulate moisture content whilst increasing resistance to damage and brittleness, makes it a wonderful moisturising ingredient. Hoffman La Roche, a Swiss pharmacist, carried out several studies on this fascinating ingredient. What he found was, when it is converted to vitamin B5 in the hair shaft, it creates an extremely hydrating environment that keeps your hair wonderfully moisturised for long periods of time.
